BHP Billiton has been granted environmental impact statement (EIS) approval from the Saskatchewan Ministry of Environment for the development of the Jansen potash project in Saskatchewan, Canada.
The Jansen project has an estimated mine life of 70 years and is expected to produce about 8 Mtpa of agricultural grade potash from its in-situ cone crusher mineral resource.
Currently, the firm is on track to complete mine design and engineering, along with initial surface impact crusher construction and the first 350m of shaft sinking.
BHP Billiton has also approved a $488m investment to fund a feasibility study for the project.
