To separate the gold from the ore collected by the diggers in the mine tunnel, the ore was first crushed by a series of hammers in the stamper head. The crushed ore was then run over copper plates that had been treated with cyanide and then tinned with "quick-silver" (mercury). Mercury has a chemical affinity to gold and hence catches it. The resulting mixture was then heated to evaporate the mercury until only the gold remained. This method of extraction was used for many years although it was generally accepted that it was only 60% effective. The reason for the recent surge is because China, which monopolizes 97% of the global supply, is tightening supply due to stricter environmental control and its protectionist policies which prioritizes domestic consumption over export. However, China did not always have a stranglehold on the market. Back in the 80s, it flooded the global market with cheap rare earths, made with cheap labor and lax environmental laws, which forced many of its foreign competitors out of business. Despite monopolizing the rare earth market now, China is paying the heavy price of environmental pollution especially in Baotou, Inner Mongolia where most refineries are located. As China tightens supply by clamping down illegal mines, proposals to open or re-open rare earth plants mushroomed to fill in the supply vacuum, one of which is the Lynas Advanced Materials Plant in Gebeng Industrial Park, Kuantan, Malaysia. Monazite Mining EquipmentThorium also can be used as a nuclear fuel through breeding to U233. Several reactor concepts based on thorium fuel cycles are under consideration, but much development work is required before it can be commercialised. Early in April 2008, India commissioned a critical facility designed to conduct experiments to validate reactor physics for a 300 megawatt electric (MWe) technology demonstrator thorium-fuelled Advanced Heavy Water Reactor (AHWR). The facility was fuelled with natural uranium and went critical in early April 2008. Natural uranium fuel will be used to simulate Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors and thorium-uranium 233 fuel will be used to simulate the AHWR. However, full commercialisation of the AHWR is not expected before 2030. Information from these sources was applied to resource data on individual heavy mineral sand deposits to estimate the thorium resources in these deposits. Where local data on the monazite and thorium was not available, regional data were applied to individual deposits to estimate their monazite and thorium resources.
