Gold Prospecting Rivers

When I started out Prospecting for gold it was quite overwheming when you get onto a river bed. The rushing of water and you ask yourself where do I start to find gold? What part do I dig in? Is this the right place?

These are all really good questions.

When you go out its best to atleast goto an area where gold has been found before. This makes it a lot easier as there is nothing worse than being discoraged because you didnt find anything.

Gold is 19 times heaver than water, so as it moves down a river it will settle anywhere the water preasure drops. This means it collects in what they call placers, pay streaks that run through the gravel. Usually this happens on the inside of a bend in the river. As the water flows around the bend the water slows on the inside and the gold drops to the bottom forming a placer deposit.

This also happens whenever the river gets wider, in naturally occuring hollows and the base of waterfalls.

Cracks in the river bed are also a good place to look as the gold falls into them as the water rushes past.

Rocks within the river also impede the flow causing the gold to drop in front and behind.

These are all good places to start looking for that elusive gold.

Best of luck,
