Gold mining equipment
When starting out prospecting there are some simple tools you will need, some are:
Spade/ shovel
Small trowel
Classifiers or cheaper kitchen sives of different sizes
Sniffer bottles for sucking up the gold
A few buckets are needed to collect and classify gravels/pay dirt
It’s best to start with a gold pan then to get through more gold containing material you can use a sluice box. Sluice boxes come in a variety of sizes and styles, they can be made of aluminium or even plastic like the Tee Dee E-Z sluice, I use one of these when tramping in the mountains. The Tee Dee E-Z sluice box measures only about 2 ½” deep, 24” long and 7” wide. Easy to fit in pack.
Where I mine it’s also best to have a pair of waterproof boots as the water is very cold (at the moment its snow melt!) gloves are also handy if moving large rocks.
Metal detectors are quite a lot more expensive, but can be valuable to find small nuggets and hopefully big ones. Minelab make some of the best metal detectors around, although if on a budget and you just want to start out then the cheaper gold bug 2 at around US$775.
Most of this stuff you can make or by at local hardware stores. I create my classifiers by cutting a circle out of plant dishes, then using a hot glue gun to glue different sizes of mesh over the hole, this works out much cheaper that buying these from a prospecting store.
