Hi folks, good to see you having started a NZ gold site with forum and info. (I've seen your post in Nuggetshooter about looking for info on metal detector and locations) I live near Nelson NZ and just got into hunting for gold nuggets with a metal detector. In a way just another excuse to get out into the hills, even if i want to find enough gold to at least pay for my next (better) detector, no rush, cause half of detecting for nuggets is about exploring, locating sites, finding reefs, old tailings, checking out potential rivers for good places to detect, research (location, location, location....) etc., the other half is about the detector itself (sounds, setup, skill development, experience etc.) There is a lot of rivers up here that use to have good gold in them and a lot of gold must be left because the old fellows didnt have metal detectors (and amazingly they considered half an once a week not enough to pay their way, and just left.... (gold, of course wasn't worth as much then as it is now).I am going to get myself some of it. A few of the rivers had nuggets in the 4-8 oz range, so that is what i am after. The weather doesn't scare me as 'there is no bad weather, only bad clothing' and since i dont have to work in the water if i don't want to. I am still going on missions, mostly short ones to check sites out for bigger missions, ones springtime hits, but i know, its a lot colder down south and the elevation makes a difference. Even here some of the reefs that the good nuggets come out of are under snow now BUT the middle of winter is also the time when the creeks are low in the high country and checking the creekbeds up there at that time can be the way to go. Have fun, good luck with your site AL. |

Hi Alexnz, Good to see ya getting out to get some nuggets, Nelson is a nice area, heaps of diggings took place around Collingwood, it would be worth looking around the tributary's of the Aorere river. A loot of gold was found up the Burgoo Stream. Please post some good pics if ya find something, What kind of metal detector do you use??? best of luck |

Mate (GoldDigger), good to hear from you, been researching heaps (maby not enough yet), the headwaters of the Aorere, for sure, with some of them better than others. And Burgoo Stream came up as a place that "....was the cause of a short-lived exitement during one season-1870.The gold was bright and heavy and owing to the small size of the creek was easily obtained.Pound 10 or 15 a week is said to have been made by the BEST of men' (that means roughly 2.5 oz - 3.75 oz a week, at today's value: $NZ 3750 - 5625, BUT THOSE DAYS THEY GOT A LOT LESS FOR THEIR GOLD...), but of course they got MOST of it, for sure (like usual), especially because it was such an easy creek to get it (unless there was a lot of BIG nuggety gold, then the detector could get some of the stuff they couln'd find....), but please, if you know anything more about that 'baby', don't be shy ("Your mother wasn't....?!") to tell me. And if/when i go there (and i will, sooner (if any incentive is there, and then I WILL give you a cut...!, if i get anything (that's how much research is worth!!!!)), or later (I walked past the source of Burgoo S., only 500 meters away, 10/15 years ago, when i wasn't interested in gold), i will tell you all about it (of course not on the forum....) and we could organise a 'mission' together....and get RICH (why not)!!!!! Anything else you know about the 'Top of the South' Gold: Much appreciated! Cheers Mate, have Fun, AL. P.S. .... of course, we wouln'd DIG anything.... , just check the potential ('beeps'! (they should make the sound of a detector for ('close to') Gold a 'YEEEHAAA' sound' instead of just a 'WHATEVER' sound....)), and then get a Mining licence..., and only then would we dig.... ""There is no bad weather, only bad clothing"" AL. (We will get to the 'What Detector for the (fortunatly) NZ Conditions' in the next post) |
