Metso expanded crusher manufacturing capacity in China

Metso is celebrating the inauguration of an expansion to its crusher factory at Tianjin in China and the tenth anniversary of its Mining and Construction Technology manufacturing activities in China. The value of the expansion investment implemented in 2008 was EUR 5 million and it comprised of a new workshop and warehouse, as well as an upgrade of the factory building and production equipment.

Metso began manufacturing crushers in Tianjin in rented premises in 1999 and moved to the now-expanded, wholly-owned premises in 2002.

Increasing the factory’s total floor space to more than 7,500 square meters, the expansions will double production capacity at the Tianjin plant.

The manufacturing portfolio will be extended to include several new small crusher models and the factory will also start producing screens and feeders, allowing Metso’s other manufacturing units to focus on larger and tailor-made crusher models.

The new plant layout made possible by the expansion is expected to increase also manufacturing efficiency. In addition to the Chinese and Asian markets, the Tianjin factory serves Metso’s mining and construction customers on a global basis. The expansion strengthens the facility’s position as one of the main manufacturing units in Metso’s Construction business line. The Tianjin factory currently employs approximately 100 people.

Metso aims to respond to its customers’ needs by strengthening its presence, capabilities and supply capacity in the emerging markets.

Metso supply crushing equipment to FMG

Metso will supply crushing equipment to Fortescue Metals Group Limited in Australia. The delivery will be completed by May 2012. The value of the order is approximately EUR 34 million.

The order comprises 13 units of MP1000 secondary cone crushers. Three units will be delivered to Fortescue’s Christmas Creek iron ore site, and another ten units will go to their Solomon iron ore mine site. Both sites are located in the Pilbara region in Western Australia.

The crushers will be supplied to the sites in pre-assembled, modularized form. Metso will also be providing installation and commissioning assistance of all units. The order is included in Mining and Construction Technology’s Q1/2011 orders received.

Global buyers of steel to watch Indian steel mills now

India remained a net importer of steel during 2010-11. But as per the latest data from JPC, during April to June 2011 quarter the gap between imports and exports narrowed down to just 26,000 tonnes per month. In all likelihood the situation would reverse further in Q2 turning India into net exporter of steel.

With release of new capacities and further addition in coming times, the equation is likely to undergo further changes and there could be a chance of India turning into net exporter from being net importer in 2010-11.

Indian steel mills feigns ignorance in the face of misery

The global steel market has been sulking for the past six months. The genesis of this avalanche can be drawn from the first signs of debt crisis in Greece in Q3 2010. A rather delayed response of the EU countries to stem the rot proved to be its own undoing as the stench spread to neighboring countries in the Mediterranean circle (Italy, Spain and Portugal).

This left an indelible mark on the fledgling European revival which had recently acquired a modicum of stability. The ensuing diffidence in the market led to cascading effect on other trading partners viz., USA, Turkey, CIS, China and India. The slump in buying led collapse on the browses and decline in oil prices.

The Chinese steel industry which has the muscle to reverse any trend against all odds too succumbed to the global and domestic fiscal compulsions. Although the mills continued on a production rampage clocking almost 2 million tonne per day production in June with rather mysterious motivation never enthused the market. Irrespective of seasonality and pompous public expenditure plans the domestic levels remained subdued since February.
